When you have a carpet for a very long time, even though you might vacuum clean it once a week, you start to notice some stains which becomes very difficult to get rid of. And there is also a possibility that bacteria are using a carpet as their home. So, carpet disinfection is really needed.
Carpet Disinfection Without Any Steam Cleaner
All the steam cleaning methods sounds better and easier for carpet disinfection, the cost of buying or renting a Carpet Steam Cleaner can be too much. So, here is a cheaper alternative.
The things which you will need are bucket, scrub brush, liquid dish detergent, white vinegar, baking soda and an old rag.
1. Clear the Furniture
First thing is that you make sure you remove all the furniture off your carpet to clear out the space. Then, you need to vacuum clean it, so that you remove the dust and dirt on the carpet which are easily removable with a vacuum cleaner. You need to be really careful and thorough while doing it. For that you need to vacuum in four different directions and in slow motion. After that you need to sprinkle baking soda and allow it to sit for 5 minutes while you are preparing the mixture.
2. Prepare the Mix
Take a bucket and mix equal amount of cold water, vinegar and a little liquid dish detergent. Whip it intensely until you get a foamy consistency. These ingredients are necessary for disinfecting and cleaning the carpet.
Although they have these properties, the effect of it depends on the fabric of the carpet. Sometimes it might discolor, or slightly damage the fabric. It is always advisable to test the solution in a small, noticeable part of the carpet, if it does not cause any bad effect on the part, then you are good to go.
3. Start Scrubbing
Dip the scrubbing brush in the solution, and start scrubbing the carpet. Do not saturate it with the liquid, we just need the carpet to be a little wet. Start from one corner and then keep scrubbing to the other. Re-saturate the brush whenever needed. Let it sit for 5 minutes so that the ingredients can work their way.
4. Rinse your Carpet
Now, prepare another mixture with cold freshwater and then again scrub your carpet with a rag, which will help you remove the bacteria and dirt which the previous mixture has picked up. You can re-saturate the rag or use a clean one whenever needed.
5. Let it Air Dry
Clean the carpet on a dry day or low humidity day, this will help your carpet to dry faster or switch on your fan.
6. Vacuum your Carpet
In order to remove the residues of the mixture, clean the area with a vacuum cleaner. It will also leave your carpet fluffy and soft. This is the last step of your carpet disinfection.
If the above process of carpet disinfection is becoming too much work for you there is another way. Just fill a spray bottle with a mixture of vinegar and water and spray it all over your carpet.
